10/12/2011: Fully automatic metal analysis operational

LDM has recently brought a fully automatic metal analysis system into operation that is supplied turn-key by PANalytical in Almelo. The samples from the smelting furnaces are presented crude at an entry point before being positioned by a robot in a CNC saw/milling machine and the required analysis equipment. Besides production samples, the new system is also used for the analysis of raw materials and final inspection samples.

For the analysis of alloy compositions LDM makes use of simultaneous Wavelength-Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (WD-XRF) for the main elements, and an Optical Emission Spectrograph (OES) for the light trace elements. Software produces a combined measurement result based on detection limits and calibration ranges of both analysis appliances.

The basic calibration of the systems was an enormous challenge. Use is also made of hundreds of certified reference samples with different laboratories analysing their composition by wet chemistry. Periodic recalibrations and control measurements are automatically carried out by the robot so LDM continually demonstrates compliance with all quality requirements.

The analysis results are saved in a database and can be displayed on screens at the smelting furnaces. Data processing forms part of the Manufacturing Execution System (MES), which is highly useful for statistical examinations as necessary for ISO-TS 16949 certification.

With the introduction of this technically very high quality analysis system, LDM is able to yet more accurately analyse special alloys and accordingly be prepared for the future.
