It does, indeed, sound pretty simple. LDM operates lorries which meet maximum weight limits but which still have plenty of surplus space. So, find someone who wants to transport polystyrene or feathers and you can fill up your lorry. A simple and ideal combination. LDM saves on costs, the environment is less heavily burdened. The fact that, in reality, this is much more difficult than it sounds is something that Geert Beekmans and Jos van Wordragen know full well as a result of their experiences. They have been working with others over the past few months on setting up so-called combi-transport. “The first task was to seek out a suitable partner”, says Geert Beekmans “but this was far from easy as many companies considered it to be too much bother. To get involved, you really need to believe in it”, he adds. Subesequently, it wasn’t long before many of the companies dropped out. Sometimes this was due to the fact that the combination was not good enough but sometimes it was just because there were too many other limitations. “Nonetheless, we eventually found two companies to take part in a transport trial”, says Jos van Wordragen. At the beginning of December, LDM combined a load with the company Promens, a producer of plastic containers. The journey passed via northern Germany, where the containers were delivered, to Denmark where staff had to be dropped off. It was a great success. “There are still a few practical problems”, says Jos, “but we will sort these out”. At the beginning of January a second transport trial took place with a producer of insulation material. “We now need to hold meetings to evaluate the matter. I will certainly be happy if we can supply elements of our transport in this way in the future.” |
